Long Haul Travel Essentials For Carry On Bags

Late last year and early this year I was abroad for 7 weeks in my hometown Doncaster UK, Hamburg Germany, Copenhagen Denmark and Jersey Channel Island. Prior to this travel, I have been on many holidays all around the world. During this time, I can confidently say I have picked up the do’s and don’ts of what to pack and what not to pack. Packing constantly and unpacking can be stressful and a lot of work. Before I even start packing, I normally make a list of everything I will need in my carry on bag, carry on suitcase and my main luggage. Here to make your travels a bit easier VALUME is providing a pre-made list of things you definitely need to pack in your carry on luggage to survive a long haul.

CARRY ON BAG

Portable Charger/Cable

The last thing you want to happen when on a stop over or on a plane is have your phone or computer die right at the cliffhanger of your favourite Netflix show you have been binge watching the past 8 hours. I highly recommend a portable charger in your carry on bag if not a portable charger then pack a multi-plug charger as you never know what type of adapter you will need!

I personally swear by 'Anker PowerCore 26800 power bank' you can by it from amazon for $68. Never let me down and lasts days without charge

Water Bottle

Its recommended that we drink 1-2L on an average day at home or work. When travelling on planes you really need to be hitting the 2L mark for long hauls. The recycled air along with the dry and cold air conditioning dries out your skin and causes dehydration at a faster rate. This can be hard to achieve this much water with the tiny disposable cups the attendants provide. I highly recommend taking an empty water bottle onto your flight and asking the attendants to fill up your bottle, which they will happily do!

Travel Pillow

There is nothing more frustrating then not being comfortable to sleep and not knowing where to put your head. I recommend investing in a high quality travel pillow that will last years to provide comfort on flights (Personally, I don’t trust the provided pillows)!

I use 'Glymnis Travel Pillow Neck Support Pillow' again from amazon. It will set you back $30 but is worth every penny. It is perfectly shaped for head and neck support. It is also memory foam and comes with earplugs and an eye-mask!

Headphones/Earplugs

Sometimes it is nice to zone out from all the background noise of a flight. Cancel out that baby who’s been screaming for 2 hours, silence the endless chatter and completely block out the constant buzzing of the engine! I will never enter a flight without earplugs or headphone with noise cancelling features. It is a complete game changer for the frequent flyer.

Antibacterial Wipes

I CANNOT express the importance of these! Often when a plane is cleaned there is 3-4 cleaners for hundreds of seats that have to be cleaned in an hour. Simple math tells you that your seat, TV, remote, tray or window is not properly sanitised. Before getting comfy always thoroughly wipe anything you will be touching on your flight to stop the spread of germs and illness!

Toiletry Bag

- Moisturiser

A good travel sized moisturiser is an essential of mine even for short flights! The air is really dehydrating! I highly recommend moisturising once every 2 hours.

- Hand Sanitiser

Air planes and airports are full of nasty germs that can be harmful so regularly sanitise those hands.

- Toothbrush/toothpaste

Basic hygiene here guys! Take care of that bad breath and clean your teeth.

- Deodorant roll on

There is nothing worse than being stuck next to someone with body odour for a long period of time! So make sure you aren’t that person by regularly applying roll on deodorant (No sprays while on board).

- Makeup

I am not one to wear much makeup when flying although I’ve seen people who do. In my carry on I will take a hydrating lip balm, A travel sized mascara and concealer for if needed.

CARRY ON SUITCASE

*This is personal choice for me. I personally will always take two bags on board. A carry on suitcase for the overhead locker with larger items or items I may only need at times and won’t be needing during the whole flight. I also will take small bag to store under the seat with essentials I will need regularly during the flight. If you wanted all items can be in one bag!*

Change of Clothes

For each stop over, I will take a change of clothes suiting the weather of the next country I stop over in, so I feel fresh for the new flight and ready for the weather of the destination.

Body Washing

In a 100ml bottle, I take a small amount of body wash and two flannels/face washers. One for washing and one for drying. While changing I like to wash down my body, so I don’t have the grimy airplane feeling lingering on my skin.

Snacks

When in the airport I will buy a bag of mixed nuts and fruits along with something unhealthy like chocolate or a packet of chips. Just to have something to nibble on if you don’t like the provided food.

Laptops/iPad's

Whether you have downloaded a series on Netflix or working away at a project its always good to have a computer or iPad nearby for some mid-flight entertainment.

Some Extras you may want are

- Eye Mask

- Hydrating Face Mask

- Vitamin C Water Tablets

- Book / Magazine (I always have one on me)

- Travel Documents (Essential)
